Western Australia’s Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) has slammed the mining industry’s lack of transparency about a prolonged dust monitoring failure in the iron ore town of Port Hedland.
In a letter obtained through freedom of information, DWER said the industry’s behaviour was in danger of undermining regulatory processes at the massive bulk handling port that was worth $64 billion to the nation’s economy last year.
The letter implied the Port Hedland Industry Council (PHIC) hid ongoing problems with a key monitoring site from the regulator until February this year. The monitor on Taplin Street did not work for nine months in 2019.
